Weight Loss Surgery UK real-life experiences.
Helen Bryan
Gastric bypass 2006
Helen had tried virtually everything to lose weight. "Weight Watchers, hypnotherapy, Slimmers' World, all sorts of diets. I did lose weight initially, but then I put it back on again. Then I got a hernia and had a fall, and with my foot in plaster I just got bigger and bigger.
I did lots of research into weight loss surgery and eventually came across Mr Cheruvu who I had total confidence in. On the day of my operation I was introduced to all the staff in the theatre.
I then went on a dietary and exercise regime. My typical daily intake of food now consists of three small meals and a few snacks, all based on high-protein foods supplemented with carbs and, of course, 5-a-day fruit and vegetables. There's no need to miss out on dining out as well - I just ask for a child's portion or go with a friend and we share. Occasionally I do eat too much but the next day I find I can't eat very much at all, so I eat very light food and it rights itself.
I also benefited from a buddy system which meant that I always had people with similar problems to mine to talk to. In fact, I now run the Obesity Patients Association (OPA) which gives patients all the support they need to help them through their surgery and weight loss."
Barbara Dugmore
Gastric banding
“My life has changed completely. I wish I had known of Gastric Banding 40 years ago and it had been available.
I can do things that I haven't done in years; go to the theatre or cinema and fit into the seats without having to wait until everyone had gone incase I got stuck.
I can walk better, breathe better and enjoy the simple things in life especially exercise and swimming without embarrassment.
I feel 20 years younger and am enjoying life to the full.”
