Intragastric Balloon

Diagram of the Intragastric BalloonThis soft, silicone balloon is a short-term solution to weight loss. It must be combined with a commitment to adopt new healthy eating habits if the weight loss is to continue when the balloon is removed after six months.

With the balloon in place in your stomach, you feel fuller and not so hungry, helping you to eat less and lose weight. The procedure takes around 20-30 minutes and is usually done as a day-case procedure. You're then monitored for a short time before being discharged, and most people return to work within a few days.

After the surgery, your diet and exercise become vital so you'll need to keep in regular touch with our dietician to ensure you get the most from the procedure and that you don't put the weight back on after the six months.

  • 15-25kg (2.5-4 stone) average weight loss during the 6 months
  • Best suited to people who can commit to strict dietary and lifestyle changes
  • 1 day in hospital, no overnight stay, back to work within a few days
  • Available to people with a BMI of 30-35
